About Bhitarkanika
👉 Experience nature. Live the forest.
👉 Experience nature. Live the forest.
Tucked away on the eastern coast of India in the Kendrapara district of Odisha lies Bhitarkanika, a wild wonderland where rivers weave through dense mangrove forests, saltwater crocodiles silently patrol the creeks, and rare birds glide through the coastal skies. Often called India’s mini-Amazon, Bhitarkanika is a paradise for nature lovers, birdwatchers, and adventure seekers who long to immerse themselves in one of India’s most unique and thriving ecosystems.
What Makes Bhitarkanika Special?
Bhitarkanika is the second largest mangrove ecosystem in India after the Sundarbans. But what makes it truly exceptional is its rich biodiversity and unique geography. This 672 sq. km. area includes mangrove forests, tidal rivers, estuaries, creeks, mudflats, and wetlands, supporting an astonishing variety of flora and fauna.
Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1975 and later upgraded to a national park in 1998, Bhitarkanika is also a Ramsar Wetland Site, recognizing its importance on the global conservation map.
Wildlife Encounters: Saltwater Crocs & Beyond
The biggest stars of Bhitarkanika are its saltwater crocodiles, including some of the largest found anywhere in the world. These reptiles, often exceeding 18 feet in length, can be spotted basking along riverbanks or gliding through the water.
A Glimpse into History & Culture
Bhitarkanika once served as the hunting grounds of the Rajkanika royal family, who constructed canals, embankments, and hunting lodges in the region. Remnants of this history still echo through the park, giving it a mystic blend of wildlife and heritage.
Tourism & Eco-Adventure
Exploring Bhitarkanika is best done by boat — gliding through creeks flanked by mangroves, watching crocodiles sunbathe, and listening to the songs of unseen birds. Entry points include Khola and Gupti, where you can start a guided forest safari.
One of the best ways to experience the park is by staying in or near the forest. BhitarKanika Mangrove Pitta Homestay offers a one-of-a-kind stay experience right beside the river and deep inside the forest. With delicious homemade meals, comfortable accommodation, and a nature-loving, experienced host, it’s ideal for families, solo travelers, and eco-tourists looking for a safe, affordable, and immersive experience.
